Mesothelioma

Our Mesothelioma Unit specializes in diagnosing and treating mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer affecting the mesothelium, the protective lining that covers many of the body’s internal organs. Our team of highly experienced physicians and healthcare professionals are dedicated to providing our patients with the most advanced care options, tailored to their unique needs

Understanding Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is predominantly caused by exposure to asbestos, although it can also be caused by radiation treatment (used for other types of cancer) or the SV40 virus. The disease tends to have a higher incidence among men

The primary types of mesothelioma include:

  1. Malignant mesothelioma epithelial type (50%-60% of cases)
  2. Mixed type or biphasic malignant mesothelioma (30% of cases)
  3. Malignant mesothelioma fibrous type (sarcomatoid type, 10% of cases)

Symptoms often include chest pains and shortness of breath

Our Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment

At our Mesothelioma Unit, we offer a range of tests and imaging techniques to accurately diagnose and monitor mesothelioma. The Mesotholiene test, performed in our Immunology Laboratory under the leadership of Prof. Vivienne Barak, is one such diagnostic tool. While the marker is not specific to mesothelioma, a high level in the blood of a potential patient is important to track their response to treatment. Other markers and imaging techniques such as CT scans, MRIs, and PET scans can also help us track and evaluate the disease.

Due to the rarity of mesothelioma, there are limited guidelines for treatment, and each case requires a unique approach. Treatment strategies may include surgical resection, radiation treatment, and chemotherapy. Currently, the most accepted treatment strategy is chemotherapy with a combination of Premetexed-Alimta and Carboplatin. Other drug combinations, like Cisplatin with Doxil, have also been used successfully at our center. For patients with peritoneal mesothelioma, radical resection of the tumor using chemotherapy during operation is an option.
