Early Detection

Our Unit for the Early Detection of Colorectal Cancer (CRC) has been actively working for over a decade towards the prevention of CRC. This initiative is made possible with the support of the Israel Cancer Association, which funds a part-time position for the Unit Coordinator. Our team focuses on both high-risk populations (including families of patients with CRC, those with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, and women post-breast cancer surgery) and average-risk populations

Community Initiative for CRC Prevention

In collaboration with the Jerusalem Municipality, we have initiated a community project over the past seven years to promote CRC prevention. Each year, we select a different neighborhood for this initiative. Residents aged between 45-70 years are individually encouraged through mailed letters to have sigmoidoscopies performed. This endeavor has led to impressive results, with over 1500 sigmoidoscopies performed and 20 cases of colonic carcinomas (mostly early detection) identified. Additionally, more than 120 individuals with polyps have been successfully treated through this project.

Metropolitan Center for the Early Detection of Colorectal Cancer

The Metropolitan Center for the Early Detection of Colorectal Cancer, a joint venture between the Service of Gastroenterology at Hadassah and the Jerusalem Municipality, provides vital screening services for CRC to the general public. We aim to offer comprehensive information about CRC and perform screening tests such as fecal occult blood tests and sigmoidoscopies among the average-risk population.

As part of our ongoing mission, we are actively developing a database and promoting clinical research studies. Through these efforts, we have been successful in determining a screening protocol for the early detection of colorectal cancer. This initiative reinforces our commitment to preventive healthcare and early detection, improving the prospects and quality of life for those at risk of CRC.

By focusing on both research and clinical practice, our unit is leading the way in the early detection of CRC. Our goal is to continue to expand our understanding and improve our practices to safeguard the health of our community.
